VMRay co-founders Dr. Carsten Willems and Dr. Ralf Hund have a strong background in malware sandbox technology, developing analysis and detection tools even before founding VMRay in 2013. Ralf contributed to Microsoft’s mobile OS sandbox and the widely used Anubis sandbox, while Carsten created CWSandbox, one of the first commercial malware sandboxes, later acquired by Sunbelt Software. Their doctoral research at Ruhr-University Bochum addressed key shortcomings in existing sandbox technologies, forming the basis for VMRay’s approach. In a 30-minute Risky Business Podcast interview, they discuss the evolution of malware sandboxes, evasion techniques, and how sandboxing can be leveraged earlier in the action chain.
